The WKWSCI Volunteer Programme, or WeeVolunteer, is a student-led organisation that aims to benefit both local and overseas communities in need. It is run by undergraduates from the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information at the Nanyang Technological University.
Together with his team, Eugene embarked on a journey to revamp the volunteer programme, aiming to galvanise the student population by providing more opportunities to volunteer both locally and overseas. Bearing in mind the concerns about sustainability and "voluntourism", the team set out to utilise the skills of the volunteers in the programmes.
In 2018, a local volunteer chapter was launched to engage more students in volunteering. A team of 20 students also went to Luang Prabang, Laos, to build a water filter for a village, teach the local children English, all while discovering stories about Laos to tell our friends and the rest of the world.
As the Chairperson of WeeVolunteer, Eugene set the direction of the team and supervised the running of both the local and overseas programmes. Eugene also guided the volunteers in terms of production knowledge and scripting, supervised all aspects of the production process, designed and coded the website.
